Azuis e brancos lose Pelé to Portsmouth

By: j | January 26th, 2009

While not surprising, the Dragões announced today that they have loaned Pelé to Portsmouth of the English Premier League with a purchase option for €6.5m. The superb young midfielder had worked into Jesualdo Ferreira’s lineup since coming over from Inter Milan in the deal involving Ricardo Quaresma.

Following the move the twenty-one year old Portugal U21 international said on the Portsmouth web-site:

“The Portsmouth fans can expect to see a lot of work and dedication – and hopefully some goals. I’m confident I can impress them. I want to win the support of the fans and achieve all that I possibly can with Portsmouth.”

I will not mix words with this as I am extremely disappointed not to see him progress with Porto. He is a flourishing young talent, from Porto and should have been given far greater opportunity. Hopefully this move will be short and he’ll return to the Azuis e brancos
