Fenerbahçe Champions League match review
By: j | September 18th, 2008Porto’s Champions League hopes started perfectly with a 3-1 blow-out of Istanbul giant Fenerbahçe at at Estádio do Dragão.
Jesualdo Ferreira’s men came out on fire to the delight the 38,000+ Dragões supporters on-hand. It took only eleven minutes before Porto took the lead as Raul Meireles set-up for a beautiful one touch goal by Lisandro López. Only a few minutes later, fellow Albicelestes Lucho González doubled the lead from a perfect set-up by Cristian Rodríguez that resulted from a complete defensive lapse from the visiting Fenerbahçe. Lisandro missed shortly there after when left all alone he put too much strength into the ball as ‘keeper Volkan Demirel rushed forward. Porto continued on the attack, never relenting and at the twenty-ninth minute ex-RCD Mallorca man Daniel Güiza scored on the counter. After the break, with a 2-1 intact Porto pushed forward with Mariano just missed the third of the match. With the visitors actively looking for the tying goal in the dying moments, Romanian international Cristian Săpunaru centered a pass to Lino streaking down the left channel who slickly side-footed it into the net.
Post match, Kâzım Kâzım commented of Porto:
“We made things hard for ourselves.”
“We had opportunities, but couldn’t take them and we got punished. We’re livid with ourselves, because usually in Europe we’re very good.”
“We played a different system that surprised us a little.”
“We had a lot of men in midfield and it was difficult to get Alex and Emre [Belözoğlu] on the ball.”
“We played a good side who are confident at home. They’ve got a lot of good footballers, and Lucho was different class tonight. So these things happen.”
A great start to the Champions League for the Dragões who return to action this Sunday against Rio Ave. Next up in the Champions League is a visit to Arsenal.
