Porto advances in Champions League

Jesualdo Ferreira’s Dragões advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Fenerbahçe at Istanbul’s Sükrü Saraçoglu in a score-line that was flattering to the hosts. Fenerbahçe never looked prepared to compete in the match as Lisandro López struck at the eighteen and twenty eight minutes to give Porto a shocking two goal lead before the half hour mark. While the legendary Sükrü Saraçoglu has been a fortress in the past, the Dragões cared little of the extraordinary home support and ran roughshod over the pitch. Turkish capped ‘keeper Volkan Demirel saved Fenerbahçe’s day on numerous occasions to ensure the score-line wasn’t worse. The hosts lone spark was Kâzım Kâzım who luckily for Porto was left out of the starting the lineup and didn’t enter till the re-start. The young whirlwind contributed with a stunning work-rate and three minutes past the hour mark he created Fenerbahçe’s lone goal as his drive richocheted off Bruno Alves and into the net. However all other efforts were easily thwarted thereafter if not non-existent and Porto took the 2-1 victory.
