Trofense holds Porto to nil draw
By: j | January 11th, 2009In a brilliant defensive performance, newly promoted Trofense put forth a superb defensive effort and held the defending champions to a nil draw at Estádio do Dragão. The draw is costly for the azuis e brancos as they fall to third in the table with Benfica climbing to first-place.
Jesualdo Ferreira’s pre-match concern of Trofense proved hauntingly accurate as they challenged the Dragões at every opportunity and made it very clear they would not back down. While the visitors clearly intended to play a defensive match and play well behind the ball, they did so perfectly and with Trofense ‘keeper Paulo Lopes urging them on they were able to gain a point at Porto. Porto’s advances were quickly nullified for the most part and after Milton do Ó was excused in injury time, the home side was still unable to find the winning strike and the match concluded as a scoreless draw.
Porto returns to domestic play against S.C. Braga on Jan 25.
